Arising from societal needs and a vast and expanding inventory of existing aging structures, the concrete rehabilitation industry is in an age of rapidly evolving technologies and expanding knowledge base. With so many new and evolving resources being developed each year by professional organizations, it can be difficult to keep up with the current state of practice for effectively evaluating structures and implementing successful rehabilitation projects. This presentation will discuss new and recently updated industry standard codes and specifications, guides, certifications and educational training resources developed in the United States over the last decade to help concrete restoration professionals effectively evaluate structures, and design, inspect and install quality concrete repairs. Types of resources will be distinguished to help engineers, contractors, inspectors, code officials and others determine how to select a resource for a particular need, and brief project examples will be used to highlight how some of the resources discussed might be used.  By attending, one should be able to gain a better understanding of the breadth and depth of information available and how available resources may help them become a better rehabilitation professional. The presenter will offer some thoughts and perspective on where the industry may be headed in the future.

• Differentiate between codes, specifications and guides, and determine how to use each of these effectively when evaluating a structure or participating in a concrete rehabilitation project.
• Understand the dynamics between codes, specifications, inspection, and application and how the synergy of these leads to quality concrete repairs.
• List the conditions that currently drive the industry towards technological advancements and a deepened knowledge base.
• Identify some impactful industry resources and initiatives that have been developed or updated over the last decade and may be useful for evaluating structures or designing, inspecting and installing quality concrete repairs.

David G. Tepke, PE, FACI SKA Consulting Engineers, Inc. David G. Tepke, PE is a Principal Engineer and Group Manager at SKA Consulting Engineers, Inc., Charleston, SC, office. His primary interests and experience include testing and analysis, construction evaluation and troubleshooting, structural investigations, durability assessments and design for service life-extension of new and existing structures. David serves on ICRI Committees 160 (Life-Cycle and Sustainability), 510 (Corrosion); and ACI Committees 201 (Durability), 301 (Specifications), 222 (Corrosion), and 329 (Performance Criteria for Ready-Mix Concrete). He is a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute, and a NACE/AMPP Certified Corrosion Specialist and Protective Coating Specialist. He is also an At Large Member of the ICRI Board of Directors. David received his B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Penn State University and is a registered professional engineer in a number of states.
