2020 ICRI Spring Convention Cancelled

Cancellation FAQs

March 11, 2020

After careful consideration, ICRI’s Executive Committee has decided to cancel the 2020 ICRI Spring Convention in Vancouver, B.C.

Quite simply, the safety of our members and their families is of paramount importance. With the rapidly evolving outbreak of COVID-19 and increasing travel bans by our member companies, we have concluded that it is neither safe nor practical to move forward with the Spring Convention.

Despite the cancellation, ICRI is adapting our plans to continue facilitating virtual committee meetings. We’re also exploring options to provide you with the educational content scheduled for the convention, in lieu of the live technical presentations.  Stay tuned for those details in the coming weeks.

We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to ICRI’s British Columbia chapter for the incredible efforts they have invested in the Spring Convention, and we hope to return to the great city of Vancouver for a future ICRI convention.

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, volunteers and staff, I cannot thank you enough for your ongoing and inspiring dedication to this great organization. We will weather this storm and come back even stronger. We look forward to seeing you at the Fall Convention in Minneapolis from October 5-7, 2020!

Sincerely,

Mark LeMay
ICRI President

Convention Cancellation Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the 2020 Spring Convention cancelled?

After closely monitoring updates and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), state and local governments, and following travel advisories and restrictions, the ICRI Executive Committee have decided to cancel the 2020 ICRI Spring Convention. We never want to risk exposing people in our workforce to a situation where they could be compromised and unable to work for an extended period of time. With the growing number of registrant and speaker cancellations, as well as the numerous institutional travel restrictions in place, our leadership has determined that it is in the best interest of all not to move forward with the meeting.

Are all additional events associated with the 2020 Spring Convention cancelled as well?

All additional events including receptions, exhibit hall, pre-conference sessions, and in-person committee meetings are also cancelled. If you were meeting with another organization onsite in Vancouver, please reach out to them directly with questions. Additional information regarding virtual committee meetings will follow in the coming days.

Will the 2020 Spring Convention be postponed until a later date or rescheduled?

Will attendees and exhibitors be refunded by ICRI for hotel and airline costs?

ICRI will not be able to reimburse you for your travel expenses. The JW Marriott Parq Vancouver will be canceling all room reservations made through the ICRI room block. You will receive an email from the hotel notifying you of the cancellation. If any attendee still wishes to travel, they will need to re-book a room. If you are staying at another hotel, you must contact them directly to cancel. We suggest you contact your airline and request a refund. If they are unwilling to grant a full refund, they may be willing to reschedule you for another flight in the future.

I was scheduled to present a session, paper, poster, or case at the ICRI Spring Convention. Does the cancellation of the meeting mean I can no longer list my presentation on my resume or CV?

In discussion with several leaders in the academic community, it is their opinion it is acceptable to include your presentation or poster on your CV and note the convention was cancelled. You are also advised to inquire with your own division/department leadership if you are up for promotion soon.

Sample listing: Presentation/poster title, indicate accepted (alternatively invited if asked to present), developed, scheduled to be delivered on ___ (date) yet not delivered due to reason (conference cancellation/travel restriction reason)
