The Certification program has two tiers. Tier 1 applicants are those who are not regularly engaged in slab moisture testing, yet have an active interest in learning more about the tests, what the tests mean, and how the tests should be performed. Tier 2 applicants are those who seek full certification. Both tiers require attendance at a 3-hour educational session, followed by a written exam. Tier 2 full certification applicants will also be required to perform each of the five applicable ASTM tests under the watchful eye of a qualified judge who will not provide any level of coaching. Pre-qualification for acceptance into the Tier 2 full certification program will be previous hands-on moisture testing experience, as approved by ICRI. As an alternative, applicants may take the optional Demonstration and Workshop to fulfill the previous testing experience requirement.
Tier 1, the Concrete Slab Moisture Testing Educational Program, and the accompanying Written Examination, is open to anyone. Those who successfully complete this portion of the program (including passing the Written Examination) will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement from ICRI.
The full certification program, Tier 2, ICRI Concrete Slab Moisture Testing Technician—Grade 1, consists of the same 3-hour educational session, a written exam, and a field testing performance exam. By passing both the written and field testing performance exams, an ICRI Concrete Slab Moisture Testing Technician—Grade 1 certification will be issued by ICRI. Those who pass both the written and field testing performance exams will receive a certificate and a wallet card. They can also be added to the ICRI Certified Concrete Slab Moisture Testing Technician database on the ICRI website if desired.
Pre-qualification for acceptance into the Tier 2 full certification program is required and is based on the applicant's previous hands-on moisture testing experience, which must be approved by ICRI. Applicants for Tier 2 must provide previous experience information on the Registration Form.
ICRI Concrete Slab Moisture Testing Technician Certification, Grade I, shall be valid for a period of five (5) years from the date of completion of all applicable certification requirements.
Demonstration and Workshop (optional)
As an option, applicants for Tier 2 without previous hands-on slab moisture testing experience, or applicants who wish to enhance their slab moisture testing ability, may take the Demonstration and Workshop. All five ASTM tests included in the certification program will be demonstrated with opportunity for hands-on testing and training by our instructors/judges. Participation in this session will fulfill the requirement of previous hands-on slab moisture testing experience necessary for acceptance into the Tier 2 full certification program.
Both the written and performance exams will be based on the Educational Session and the following five (5) ASTM Standards, including all Annexes and Appendices:
- F710 Preparing Concrete Floors to Receive Resilient Flooring; Section 5.2 pH Testing.
- F1869 Measuring Moisture Vapor Emission Rate of Concrete Subfloor Using Anhydrous Calcium Chloride
- F2170 Determining Relative Humidity in Concrete Floor Slabs Using in situ Probes
- F2659 Preliminary Evaluation of Comparative Moisture Condition of Concrete, Gypsum Cement and Other Floor Slabs and Screeds Using a Non-Destructive Electronic Moisture Meter
- F3191 Field Determination of Substrate Water Absorption (Porosity) for Substrates to Receive Resilient Flooring
Five ASTM Standards will be provided as free electronic downloads to paid registrants (Tier 1, Tier 2, and Recertification Written Examination – does not apply to reexaminations and demonstration/workshop) and includes the five test methods covered in the program (ASTM F710, ASTM F1869, ASTM F2170, ASTM F2659, and ASTM F3191). Tier 1 and 2 registrants must print out copies and bring them to the class. Copies of the ASTMs will not be included with on-site course materials and additional copies of the ASTMs will not be available at the class. Recertification Written Examination registrants will also receive an electronic study packet prior to the class.
