The North Hamilton Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Hamilton, OH, was built in 1934. The plant is a 6 million gal. (22.7 million L) per day “peaking plant.” The North Hamilton WTP is a conventional groundwater plant, which receives its flow from five wells. The water gets pulled from an aquifer located on the campus and is the only facility in Greater Cincinnati operating in this manner.

The owner began to notice cracks on the clarifier walls and knew the concrete was deteriorating because silt was being found in the filters. Over the years, the chemicals used to treat the water had caused the concrete to break down. The exterior of the buildings had been restored in the early 1990s, but those restorations were nearly 20 years old. Evaluations based on field inspections and concrete core samplings were completed in 2010. Each key area was independently evaluated and given a score, with 1 being excellent and 5 being severely deteriorated. The overall structural evaluation for the WTP was 2.6.

With the evaluation findings, it was imperative that repairs be made to this historic structure. The scope consisted of the demolition and new construction of a garage; exterior paint removal, new painting, tuck pointing, and brick replacement of the main and chemical building; stone work; steel work for stair systems and beams; replacement of roof systems; removal and replacement of window lintels; electrical and control work; replacement of grating and hatches; removal and replacement of the concrete filter influent channel; removal and replacement of the clarifiers’ inner effluent trough along with concrete repair; replacement of steel influent wells; new roofing systems and precast panel repair; and piping and value repairs.
