Substantial restoration was undertaken at three integrated cast-in-place concrete parking structures (parkades) at the Royal University Hospital (RUH) in Saskatoon, SK, Canada. The RUH parkade complex represents a vital piece of infrastructure for Saskatchewan. Repair work was initiated after a comprehensive condition assessment revealed progressive deterioration and widespread corrosion in the parking structures. 

Structural restoration work included widespread concrete repair and replacement, drying, and regreasing of deteriorated post-tensioning tendons. Undiscovered structural deficiencies were also addressed through state-of-the-art strengthening techniques, such as carbon-fiber composites and unbonded post-tensioned concrete. A comprehensive waterproofing system consisting of topping slabs, expansion joints, joint sealants, and extra-heavy-duty traffic toppings was implemented throughout the parking structures to enhance the long-term durability. Both the partial and full-depth repairs were augmented with the installation of alkali-activated sacrificial galvanic anodes to mitigate future corrosion deterioration at the interface between the repairs and the parent concrete. A special line striping system was installed to improve traffic circulation and safety.

Due to harsh winter weather conditions, the project was conducted in two construction seasons while adhering to a strict operational schedule in Saskatchewan’s busiest healthcare facility. The owner required that large portions of the garage remain in service during repairs to minimize the impact on revenue. Concrete demolition and repair work were scheduled to minimize the noise and vibration impact on intensive care facilities. Dust was minimized through customized infection control measures. The restoration of the parking structures was accomplished through effective coordination, work phasing, and cooperation among all project team members. Throughout the project, quality control was maintained by defining and adhering to a rigorous site inspection and testing protocol.
