The First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington was organized in 1760 and actually incorporated by the state legislature in 1785. Fire destroyed the first three buildings erected by the congregation in the early 1800s. Three buildings were rebuilt, but fire destroyed the sanctuary building again on New Year’s Eve in 1925. It was succeeded by the present building, which was completed in 1928. The present church building was designed by the noted architect Hobart Upjohn.

His plans included architectural styles from three different periods: the Norman, as represented in the chapel; the Middle Period Gothic with French influence in the sanctuary; and the Elizabethan in the church school building. Each building wing possesses distinct design characteristics and material components that posed unique problems and repair challenges. The primary focus was on restoring the sanctuary and chapel. The church school building and administrative wing (built circa 1995) were lower priority at that point in time.
