Saskatoon City Hospital in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, comprises four patient levels with interstitial mechanical levels. The project involved the evaluation, repair, and strengthening of a cast-in-place, post-tensioned, waffle-slab structural framing system. The work was conducted in an interstitial space over an active emergency room with strict measures in place for noise, vibration, and infection control.

Repair work was initiated after a comprehensive condition assessment revealed extensive cracking and design deficiencies in the waffle slab system. Structural repair work included concrete spall repair, widespread epoxy injection of cracks, application of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP), and installation of shear collars at concrete columns.

The project was conducted while adhering to a strict operational schedule in Saskatchewan’s busiest healthcare facility. Concrete demolition and repair work were conducted in a manner that minimized noise and vibration impact on intensive care facilities. Dust in the interstitial mechanical space was controlled through customized infection control measures. The repair of the concrete waffle slab and supporting columns was accomplished through effective coordination, work phasing, and cooperation amongst all project team members. Throughout the project, quality control was maintained by defining and adhering to a rigorous site inspection and testing protocol.
