Designed in 1933 by prominent Kansas City architectural firm Hoit Price & Barnes and open by 1936, the Municipal Auditorium is a Kansas City historic landmark and has been recognized nationally for its architectural value. The building occupies an entire city block and was designed in a transitional art deco/modern style. The facility has been the host to NCAA Final Fours, national political conventions, and countless other sporting and theatrical events as part of the Kansas City Convention Center.

From 2010 to 2012, a comprehensive restoration of the exterior Indiana limestone façades of Municipal Auditorium was performed. The restoration included stabilization of displaced masonry, repairs to the façade sculptures, cleaning and repointing of the entire building, and patching numerous spalls and cracks. Other repairs involved plaza waterproofing and restoration of the decorative aluminum features. In addition to the restoration work, improvements were also made to the marquee and architectural lighting systems.

This complex project was performed as a design-build contract and was led by a general contractor with the design team and repair contractors working in tandem. Communication, organization, and flexibility were the key factors to this project’s success, delivering high-quality masonry restoration work to the owner on time, on budget, and with minimal interruption to the facility.
