On November 2, 2006, a truck traveling on Loop 12 near Texas Stadium in Irving hit the SH 183 Bridge overhead. The impact caused severe damage to the bridge structure, with 14 of the 20 prestressed concrete beams suffering damage. SH 183 has three lanes in each direction and is a major thoroughfare. Only 18 days after the accident, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) had the project out for contractors’ bids. The bids were due November 28, 2006. The project was awarded November 30, 2006, and the selected contractor began work December 11, 2006.

During the evaluation process, it was decided that 10 of the 14 damaged beams could be repaired and only four beams would have be replaced. This replacement involved removing the concrete deck, installing new prestressed concrete beams, and repouring the deck. The repair method for the 10 beams to remain in place involved splicing and retensioning 21 severed strands, epoxy injection, and carbon fiber composite wrap.

The contractor was limited on the lane closure dates and times due to the proximity of Texas Stadium and the number of events that were occurring during the construction period.

Coordination between the owner, contractor, subcontractors, and suppliers was the key to completing a successful project within the allotted time. Through the use of unique materials and methods, many of the beams were able to be repaired instead of replaced, saving on construction time and cost.
