Poplar Street Bridge

The deck rehabilitation of Poplar Street Bridge complex, in St. Louis, Missouri, comprising eleven interconnected entry and exit ramps, is the largest project of its type ever undertaken. With a surface area of more than 850,000 square feet (79,000 square meters), the complex is the principal access into the city of St. Louis from Interstates 55, 66, and 70, strategic east-west links across the Mississippi River carrying 150,000 vehicles daily.

With significant surface deterioration of the part concrete, part 2 in. (50 mm) asphalt overlay to the 30-year-old bridge decks, due to the freeze thaw and heavy use of deicing salt, the Missouri Department of Transportation required the project to be completed at night, with no holiday working and no permanent lane drops.

With potholes increasingly appearing in the concrete surfaces and the asphalt overlay starting to break up, the Missouri DOT specified a 1/4 in. (6 mm) epoxy broadcast overlay system following repair to the concrete deck surfaces. The epoxy/aggregate overlay was to be applied in two applications within the twelve hour work period.

Completed within the 90-day contract period, this unique project is a testimony to innovation and cooperation within the construction industry to achieve a successful project—the largest of its kind to date internationally.
