Which tier is right for me?

Tier 1

ICRI Concrete Surface Repair Technician Educational Program, Tier 1, consists of five (5) online training modules. This program is for individuals who want to receive training and knowledge on performing durable concrete surface repairs but do not perform inspections and testing in the field. Those who successfully complete this portion of the program, including passing all five (5) online training modules, will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement from ICRI. For full certification, the individual should take the Tier 2 program.

Tier 1 Consists of:

  • Module 1: What is Reinforced Concrete? / Deterioration of Reinforced Concrete
  • Module 2: Quality Requirements
  • Module 3: Repair Methods and Materials
  • Module 4: Pre-placement Inspection
  • Module 5: Post-placement Inspection

A participant has 1 year (12 months) to complete Tier 1 after starting the course. The participant will be required to repay the total course fee again to complete the course after 1 year (12 months).

Tier 2

The full certification program, Tier 2ICRI Concrete Surface Repair Technician—Grade 1, consists of the same five (5) online training modules in Tier 1, an online knowledge exam, and a performance exam (video submission or live). This program is for individuals seeking full certification. By passing the five (5) online training modules, the online knowledge exam, and performance exam, an ICRI Concrete Surface Repair Technician—Grade 1 certification will be issued by ICRI, and the individual will receive a certificate and wallet card. The individual can also be added to the ICRI Certified Concrete Surface Repair Technician database on the ICRI website if desired.
ICRI Concrete Surface Repair Technician Certification, Grade I, shall be valid for a period of five (5) years from the date of completion of all applicable certification requirements.
Tier 2 Consists of:

  • All of Tier 1:
    • Module 1: What is Reinforced Concrete? / Deterioration of Reinforced Concrete
    • Module 2: Quality Requirements
    • Module 3: Repair Methods and Materials
    • Module 4: Pre-placement Inspection
    • Module 5: Post-placement
  • The Online Knowledge Exam
  • The Performance Exam

A participant has 1.5 years (18 months) to complete the entire Tier 2 course after starting the program. The participant will be required to repay the total course fee again to complete the course after 1.5 years (18 months).

What will I need?

Four ASTM’s and ICRI Guideline No. 210.3R are required to complete both the Tier 1 and Tier 2 courses. ASTM’s are provided if requested during registration, and will be mailed to you within 2 weeks of requesting at registration. ICRI Guideline No. 210.3R is available in the course as a free electronic download. There are other documents and standards referenced throughout this course that are recommended reading for completing the courses. We have listed these on our Referenced Standards and Reports Cited page. You should consider obtaining these documents before you begin the training; however, are not required to complete the courses.

What are system requirements?

This training is offered exclusively online through our ICRI Learning Center. You will need an internet connection and up-to-date internet browser to complete this training. We strongly recommend a broadband connection as there are several training videos throughout the training modules. Firefox and Safari are recommended as the ideal browsers.

How is registration accomplished?

To sign up for either Tier 1 or Tier 2 (Which includes Tier 1), look for those courses under the Course Catalog. Select the Buy Now option and complete payment. Once payment has been completed, the course will show up under the My Learning Tab at the top, and under the My Courses area on the dashboard.

What are the fees?

Both ICRI member and nonmember pricing, as well as volume discounts, are available. To register for the Tier 1 Educational Program only, you will pay the fee provided for Tier 1. To register for the Tier 2 full certification program, you only pay the fee provided for Tier 2 (you do not need to register and pay for Tier 1 as it is included in the Tier 2 fee).

What is the course like?

The five (5) online modules that are required for both the Tier 1 and Tier 2 courses consist of training through text, video, and more. Each module has test questions throughout that must be passed in order to continue. Instructions for each module are included when you begin the module.  Plan on one to two hours to complete each module (est. time to complete and % passing grade required is indicated at the start of each module). Each module must be completed in one sitting.

We strongly recommend reading through all required content before you begin the modules. You are given two chances to pass each module. You must complete both attempts at the same time. If you fail after two attempts, you will need to purchase the re-examination and start from the beginning by retaking all 5 modules. If you leave the module for more than 15 minutes, you will be timed out, and this counts as one attempt. If you leave the module without completing and return at a later time, you will have to start at the beginning of the module, and this counts as one attempt.

Tier 2 has two additional items: the online knowledge exam and the performance exam. The knowledge exam is a 60-question online exam with questions similar to those offered in the Tier 1 modules, and are meant to demonstrate comprehension and understanding of the subject matter in Modules 1-5. Like the Tier 1 modules, the exam must be completed in one sitting. Three hours are allowed to complete the online knowledge exam. Exams must be taken alone.

For Tier 2 participants, how do you access the Knowledge Exam upon completion of Tier 1 Modules 1 – 5?

If you have completed Tier 1, you can access the Tier 2 exams by accessing them under the Course in the My Learning Area. They are listed under the Tier 2 section of the CSRT Course.

What are the requirements for the performance exam in Tier 2?

Requirements for the performance exam are listed on the exam page once you purchase the course. There are two options: Video record your own tests with the criteria provided and submit to ICRI for grading in accordance with the guidelines we provide or register to attend an in-person session to take your performance exam in front of a live judge (available Fall 2017/Spring 2018). See the Tier 2 course for more details.

The performance exam consists of four test methods per ASTM standards. There are example videos provided on the performance exam page and an exam rubric you can read to find out exactly what you will be tested on. Include link to video recording instructions. If you fail any of the performance exam tests, you are required to take a re-exam for only the tests failed at an additional fee (same fee for 1-4 tests redone).

What equipment will I need for the Performance Exam?

To conduct your performance exam, you have several options for equipment. You can provide your own equipment that conforms to the ASTM test method requirements. You can purchase the required equipment and ICRI provides links to equipment manufacturers. ICRI has also developed an equipment kit that includes most items you need, including the video camera to record your examination, if needed. A link to the equipment rental site is included in the course. Equipment rental period is for 2 weeks. Include link to Equipment Options.

Are there any videos I can watch showing the process?

Yes. After purchasing any course that includes Tier 2, information will be available in the course, including step-by-step videos showing the requirements for each part of the performans exam.

What about re-exams?

For the Tier 1 modules, if you fail a module after two attempts, you will need to purchase the re-examination and start from the beginning by retaking all 5 modules.

For the Tier 2 Knowledge exam, you get only one attempt. If you fail the exam, you will need to purchase the Knowledge re-exam.

Failure on one (1) or more of the four (4) required ASTM Standard tests on the Tier 2 Performance Examination requires retaking the specific failed test(s) only, and requires the purchase of the performance re-exam. After one (1) year of failing any of the tests on the Tier 2 Performance Exam, the entire Tier 2 Certification Program must be retaken, including the Tier 1 Educational Program (Mods 1-5), and the Tier 2 Knowledge and Performance Exams at the regular fee (re-examination fees do not apply after 1 year).
