Concrete structures can be exceptionally durable when appropriately constructed and protected. In the context of sustainability, ensuring that a concrete structure is durable and long lasting is critical since structural elements represent a significant investment in the energy, carbon, and resource footprint of a large facility. In addition to the use of resources such as aggregate, sand, and water, new concrete construction requires the production of cement which contributes to global carbon dioxide emissions.

The repair and protection of existing concrete structures serves to reduce the potential overall global emissions of CO2resulting from cement production. The construction of a large concrete structure such as Commonwealth Stadium represents many tons of CO2 emissions. Therefore, the facility owner has significantly reduced potential environmental impacts by undertaking this concrete repair and protection program as opposed to the demolition and construction of a replacement stadium facility.

In addition to extending the useful life of existing aging concrete infrastructure, the Commonwealth Stadium repair and restoration project incorporated several initiatives for environmental sustainability. Some of the more significant sustainability measures included incorporation of fly ash and silica fume cementing materials into the concrete repair mixtures and mortars; selection of highly durable and long-lasting sealant, joint, and coating materials; separation and recycling of concrete demolition debris; and use of nonsilica-based abrasive blasting materials out of consideration for worker and facility user safety. 

In addition to the reduced environmental impact, the cost savings represented by concrete restoration and renewal are significant when compared with the construction cost of a new stadium facility. Coupled with a proactive structural monitoring and maintenance program, a concrete restoration program of this nature is a cost-effective and efficient way to sustain existing built infrastructure.
