The fourth largest public square in the world, covering an area of nearly 5.4 million ft2 (half a million m2), Macroplaza is located in downtown Monterrey in the state of Nuevo León, Mexico. The Macroplaza site is divided into two sections: the first includes the new Monterrey City Hall, the monument to the sun, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Contemporary Art and Frame Museum, and Monterrey’s Casino; and the second area includes the City Theater, the Mexican History Museum, the Northeast Museum, and some walkways.

The elevated section of the plaza is crisscrossed with underpasses for two main avenues. Through the years, over 200 double-tee beams have experienced cracking and deterioration due to carbonation from vehicle exhaust and water infiltration. In addition, many columns exhibited corrosion of steel reinforcement, resulting from cracking, carbonation, and exposure to water. The need for repairs was combined with a change in the use of 86,000 ft2 (8000 m2) of the structure to accommodate new gardens.

The repair and upgrade process of the double-tee beams required epoxy injection of cracks, application of externally bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) to increase shear capacity, and application of a polyurethane coating for additional protection and aesthetic appeal. Repair of the columns was accomplished by removing deteriorated concrete in affected areas to expose reinforcing steel, application of a corrosion-inhibiting coating to the reinforcing steel, and installation of a structural repair mortar. In the garden areas, a bituminous urethane membrane was applied as a waterproofing system. The use of CFRP significantly reduced the disruption of traffic for major avenues in the city of Monterrey.
