Bayshore Boulevard in downtown Tampa borders the longest continuous sidewalk in the world. This 5 mile (8 km) long sidewalk is supported by a concrete seawall and has an ornate reinforced concrete balustrade (decorative railing) for the safety of the people using the walk.

The combination of saltwater exposure and lack of maintenance resulted in the deterioration of the concrete balustrade. The structure exhibited numerous deficiencies, including settlement and chloride-induced corrosion. The proximity to the ocean exacerbated the deterioration. Because the city was chosen to host a prestigious national event in 2012, the city administration took on the challenge of restoring this landmark.

The engineer developed a project team to create a repair strategy with representation from the city, the contractor, and the consultant. This repair strategy effectively addressed repairs without changing the appearance of the balustrades and also provided long-term protection against corrosion and lessened future maintenance costs. The northernmost section, with badly spalled concrete and corroded exposed reinforcing steel, was raised and replaced with a completely new railing that would match the existing railing. Elsewhere, cracks were sealed, joint sealant was removed and replaced, spalls were patched, reinforcing bars were replaced, and a corrosion inhibitor and saltwater spray protection were applied. 

The project had its share of challenges, including matching the shape of the original balustrade for replacement areas, designing special scaffolding, tinting the special color coating on site, keeping the sidewalk operational during construction, and making repairs to a section that experienced a car accident shortly after the project was completed. Due to the advancements in technology that the repair industry currently has to offer, this national and international landmark has been restored for future generations.
