This repair project presented some very unusual conditions. The building was an operational pier that had been damaged by several factors, which were caused by marine exposure weakening the concrete and the resulting corrosion of internal reinforcing steel. Serious structural damage was also caused by excessive overloading of the structure, including operations of the pier for loading and unloading cargo shipped from an ore-processing facility. Damage also occurred on the exterior perimeter of the dock from the berthing of ships against makeshift fenders. The opposite side of the pier performed much better in comparison.

The objective of the project was twofold: structural repairs were required to retrofit the structural damage, and the pier’s capacity needed to be increased to handle more outgoing cargo.

This project was completed without significantly interrupting the shipping of output and imported goods across the dock. The step-by-step repairs were carefully planned and executed. Most of the repairs were performed using handheld tools. This was all accomplished within the time allotted to complete the repairs.
