The Winchester Medical Center, located in northwest Virginia, was substantially completed in 1990. This new 340 bed replacement hospital comprises two L-shaped patient wings connected to a central core. The facility is five stories high with a façade comprising brick masonry, precast concrete lintels, and glass fiber-reinforced concrete (GFRC) decorative spandrel panels and sills, originally intended to perform as a cavity wall system.

During Hurricane Isabel in 2003, extensive interior leakage was again noted throughout the hospital. The hospital retained another independent forensic architect to review the structure and make recommendations for the long-term repair of the facility. The contractor who assisted during the investigation was hired to execute pilot repairs, develop shoring options and prove the viability and costs associated with this work. The work commenced during the spring of 2005.

The project consisted of the following:

  • Removal and relay in excess of 400,000 brick;
  • Removal and rebuild of 380 brick piers which required the contractor to shore, redirect structural load paths and suspend the structural window lintel above;
  • Installation of over 7400 linear ft (2256 m) of window head level flashing;
  • Installation of over 5300 linear ft (1615 m) of sill flashing;
  • Completion during periods of historically high hospital census which hampered efficient work flow and required the contractor to work around available rooms in a manner not anticipated in the original budget;
  • Completion of this work with no lost time accidents; and
  • Completion with a cost savings credited back to the owner in excess of $200K.
