In the fall of 2012, a ship loader stopped on a section of a Port of Tampa dock. Unbeknownst to the loader driver, this section of the dock had already suffered damage, possibly by a barge strike during a storm. In portions of the dock, 70% of the pre-stressed cables were either broken or weakened. On this day when the loader reached this area, the dock collapsed, sending the loader into the bay.

This dock is constructed of pre-stressed concrete double Ts. Each of the two beams is 20 in. (508 mm) thick by 6 ft (1.8 m) wide and 100 ft (30 m) long. Due to salt water infiltration, the remainder of the dock has numerous cracks and spalls on both of the beams. Because the beam bottoms are frequently below water during high tide and high ships’ wakes, the repair method decided on employed the installation of a prefabricated carbon fiber plate that could withstand the 1,500,000 lb. (680,389 kg) loader that would roll over the dock.

Prefabricated floating platforms were constructed and towed to the site. Repairs to the two major areas began by cutting out and remove the damaged sections. Reinforcing bars were then doweled into the existing beam using epoxy gel. The area was then formed and concrete was placed into the forms. A liquid-applied rubber coating was installed over the entire dock structure, sealing the concrete from any further intrusion of water or moisture. After the completion of the project, tests performed showed that the repaired section of the dock with the installed plate has a tensile capacity of 2,364,200 lbs. (1,072,383 kg).
