MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY HISTORIC QUAD RESTORATION

Springfield, Missouri

Missouri State University in Springfield, MO, recently commissioned a restoration and repair project for the three buildings on its historic quad: Carrington, Hill, and Siceluff Halls. These limestone structures were constructed between 1908 and 1927.
In 2004, a three-phase restoration project was launched to restore each building to its original glory. An investigation of the structures revealed problems such as water infiltration, deterioration, corrosion, and environmental attacks on stone and mortar. Each issue was addressed and repaired.
Due to corrosion, the entrance stairs to Siceluff Hall were completely removed and replaced. Damaged stone on Carrington Hall was meticulously patched to blend in with surrounding stone. Hill Hall also suffered from stone damage, so patching materials were used to halt and repair the deterioration. Additionally, stone patch materials, penetrating water repellants, and stone consolidators were used during the repair phase of the project.
These buildings were in use throughout the school year, so the project team had to strictly adhere to a schedule that was limited to the three-month summer break. The final phase of the project was completed in August 2007. |
