Repair and Rehabilitation of Shipping House

The Shipping House, a reinforced concrete structure built in the early 1970's, is the exclusive corporate head office for the Shipping Corporation of India. It consists of a basement, ground floor, nineteen upper stories, and a seven-story mast section. Because the building faces the sea, hostile environmental conditions, and poor maintenance (the buildings were painted only twice in 20 years), the concrete of the external façade had deteriorated.
The project consisted of repairs and replacement of entire façade, and repair to exposed portions of concrete elements, such as slab edges and columns. It also included repair of heavy composite sections of ceramic lattice supports, and replacement of delicate ceramic lattice work. One of the major challenges of the project was completing the façade work while keeping the offices fully functional, in one of the busiest commercial districts in India.
