The Shia Imami Ismaili Muslim Kabrastaan complex located in
Bombay, India belongs to the Ismaili community and serves as a
burial ground, within which are four structures: the community
hall building, the Ghusalkhana (a one-story structure), the
mausoleum, and the mosque.
The complex is located in a densely populated area and, being
a community project, much social interaction and extreme
sensitivity had to be considered before embarking on any
repair program. All four structures exhibited varying degrees
of degradation, dilapidation, neglect, and damage. The
buildings, except the mausoleum, which is a load-bearing
masonry structure, were reinforced concrete (RCC) framed
structures with traditional Islamic architectural features.
Repair work included the rehabilitation and replacement of
facades, repair/ replacement of concrete culls, arches, slabs,
sun breaker fins, and architectural RCC screens, repair,
replacement or duplication of old style minarets, lattice work
etc., and the waterproofing of all structures and application
of a protective coating.
