The existing parking structure at the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints (LDS) Hospitals’ Physicians Office
Building in Salt Lake City, Utah, was 28 years old and in need
of extensive repair. The deterioration was due to a
combination of both age and repeated use of snow-melting
salts. Also, the under-designed reinforcing scheme of the
structure did not allow for the shear or ductile strengths
needed in a Zone 3 seismic region.
The restoration work involved concrete demolition, latex
modified concrete overlay, polymer modified concrete patching
to beams and column, post-tension repairs and replacement of
broken and/or corroded cables, expansion joint removal and
replacement, asphalt removal, installation of new drains, fire
sprinkler system upgrades, electrical upgrades, and a
heavy-duty vehicular deck coating system.
The seismic work involved the placement of steel plates and
the installation of concrete curbs with embedded angles to
upgrade the precast members, and composite fiber reinforcing
to all columns to upgrade shear and ductile strength. Carbon
fiber technology was chosen as the composite reinforcing
material, using the wound tow method, and utilizing
state-of-the-art robotics.
